Introduction

For those who are willing to take on a more arduous adventure, one of the most popular places to go for a walk is the Wainwright route.

This famous walking trail is named after Alfred Wainwright, a British fellwalker, guidebook author, and illustrator.

His seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells is a classic work and is considered to be the definitive guide to the mountains of the Lake District.

The Wainright Routes

The Wainwright route consists of 214 distinct peaks, which Wainwright himself climbed and documented in his book. These peaks vary in difficulty, from the gentle slopes of Catbells to the challenging terrain of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

The route covers a total distance of 190 miles and can take up to two weeks to complete.

The routes cover:

  • The Eastern Fells
  • The Far Eastern Fells
  • The Central Fells
  • The Southern Fells
  • The Northern Fells
  • The North Western Fells
  • The Western Fells
  • The Outlying Fells

Walking the Wainwright route is a truly immersive experience, with breathtaking views of the fells, moors, and lakes that make up this stunning landscape.

The route takes you through charming villages, across babbling brooks and through ancient woodland, giving you a glimpse of the rich history and culture of the area.
